The young lad is the son of Carl Stratmann, the other founding member of the Jamaica Railway Society. He wrote a number of books under the pen name of "H G Forsythe" and recently passed away.

Gulflander at Croyton Queensland.

1937 Stewart Truck built in Buffalo, N.Y.
This truck only lasted 8 years, It lost its grill and left door. Parts were unavailable during WWII. The Stewart Motor Truck Company built trucks from 1914-1942. Some of these trucks had a BUDA engine, others had Continental or Milwaukee and later Waukesha engines.
My father and 2 of his brothers owned the Hillside Dairy. Another of my father's Brothers owned another Stewart truck with a 10 foot rack that lasted for 17 years.
Someone told me that the Buffalo, N.Y. Library has a lot of info about this company.
Taken by an unkown photograper in 1937 when it was new.

Hunslet built 1971 0-4-2 of East Java.
Check rear of engine, see bales of Bagesse a left over part of sugar cane.
The interesting part of this engine it ran on Bagesse, a left over of the sugar cane. This engine pulled in East Java. Livo Dante Porta from Argentina converted a Cuban Railway engine to burn Bagesse, No. 1816, and painted it red. He was trying to raise money to build new steam engines for Cuba that would run on Bagesse. He died this past June at age 84. It is a very cheap fuel in countries that don't have oil or coal. Some countiries have wood burners.

General No. 3 at the dedication of N&W No. 611 at Wasena Park in Roanoke, VA in 1963.
W&ARR General Built in Paterson, NJ by Rogers in 1856. It was rebuilt and ran 1961-1965 for the Civil War Anniverary.
I have it running in the silent movie of the Great Locomotive made by Buster Keaton. In the 1960 movie, William Mason played the General in a sound movie of the Great Locomotive Chase with Fess Parker.

This fire engine was made by Federal Truck they stopped making these trucks in 1965.
In this picture it was pumping water for a steam locomotive of the Iron horse Ramble, not sure if it was 2124 or 2100, at Tamaqua, PA.

Slateford Jct. Bridge at Knowlton, NJ over Route 80.
The DL&W bridge over the Delaware River was part of cutoff to be restored. They may have to replace or repair this bridge because it has not been used in 22 years.
In 1976 I saw Reading 2101 pull the American freedom Train across the Delaware River, it was night and very dark, that's why no pictures. I tried to make a sound movie on Super 8.

BR/LNER A-4 4-6-2 "Dwight Eisenhower" on a Car Float at Jersey City, NJ.
I took this picture Spring of 1964 on the CRR of NJ Communipaw Station yard of the Central RR of New Jersey. The A-4 was on a car Float,which it been put on when it was unloaded from a ship that brought it to New York City from England.
It pulled General Dwight Eisenhower's command train in England during the second world war.
It was unloaded and the B&O towed it west, eventully it moved to Green Bay, WI. and the National Railroad Museum. Its number is BR 60008 (LNER).
It is a sister engine of "Mallard," the fastest steam locomotive in the world.

Trip from Sydney to Maitland & return on 18th July to celebrate 200 years of steam in Australia with 3801 and 3830.
The 2 locomotives ran parallel for many kilometres so we were able to get good photos. I travelled behind 3801 so most photo's are of 3830.
3801 -3805 were streamlined and built by Clyde Engineering from 1943 - 1945, 3806 - 3830 were built in the NSW Government railway workshops at Eveleigh [Sydney] and Cardiff [Newcastle] between 1945 & 1949. Only 3801 & 3830 are in service at this time. [for enthusiast trips]

This restoration of CTA#3142 took 13 years to complete from deplorable condition in which it was handed over to IRM.
The wicker 30" pattern for the seats, long discontinued, was customed made from a company in the orient.

Central of New Jersey RR Fan trip to Mt.Hope Mine in 1950 with no 814 (4-6-2).
Most of the mine equipment still in place at closed mine in Rockaway New Jersey. This mine still has over a mile of very rich Magnitite Iron ore very deep in underground mines. It is to expensive to remove this Iron ore which is very rich 60% iron.
The mine has run from 1715 to 1976. It served the USA from the Revolutionary war to Korea. George Washington visited it in 1776.

1989 built Chinese steam locomotive 1647.
No 1647 on valley RR when it was new, it now is No 142 of the NYS&W RR and now (2004) is running in New Jersey from Phillipsburg to Carpenterville (4 miles) on weekends.

No 520 is a small 4-8-4 with a 5'3" gauge, could burn both oil and coal at the same time. It was possible that it was the largest operating single engine in Australia. It is a copy of the Pennsy T1. It was running around South Australia on what is the broad gauge track. - Saul

New LRV Sel propelled LRV on the River Line.
This the end of the line in Camden NJ. The river is about 300 feet from station. The Delaware River has a big Ship parked at the dock, The battleship New Jersey. The River Line actually follows the Delaware River from Trenton NJ south for almost 25 miles. Cheapest train ride in the country, only one dollar and ten cents. Saul

Historic Linn truck at Kinzers Rough & Tumble Museum.
There were steam engines built like this truck, can't find my pictures of it. There is one at Clark's trading post that actually runs when snow is on the ground. It is a LOMBARD SKIDDER built around 1915. I hope that I will find the picture of it. It has 4x4 wooden skids for steering.

I have a Video of this operation, has been running over 20 years in the Carbolitto section of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
You can find a web site for amigodel tramvia, it runs thru City streets with a lot of traffic, one of the streets is rather wide. On some special days many people ride on the 4 cars. They have many fund raisers to keep it going, 700 railfans are involved with it.

Valley (Valle) roundhouse (rotundocasa) near Mexico City DF Mexico.
I took the photo of NdeM 3035 in July 1968. She was built by Alco in 1946 for Ferrocarril Nationales De Mexico. I only rode on one Ferrocarril NdeM train.

Museum of Transport and Technology - MOTAT
Picture taken by Andrew Collins at Motat 1891. Baldwin Steam Dummy still runs. I have a video tape in PAL of it running with trams at MOTAT in Auckland New Zealand near Western Springs.
There are many active Steam locomotives and trams in New Zealand. At the Ferrymead museum on the south island of New Zealand, they have a Kitson Steam Dummy pulling a few tram cars. I also have that operation on video.

I took pictures of LNER no. 4472 the Flying Scotsman in New York City Penn Station, At the time I went into the cab, later I found out that I was on the Foot Plate.
2 pictures found that were taken in Harrison NJ on the Pennsy Main line you can see the Third Rail of the PATH RR in front of me while taking no. 4472.
As of April 2004 The Flying Scotsman Engine is up for sale in England. I do have Pal video tapes showing this engine moving in Australia and England.

I took picture at the Valley (Valle) roundhouse July 1968. NdeM = Ferrocarril Nationales de Mexico.
It was a Sunday, had to pay a worker one US dollar to take the engine out of the stall. These 4-8-4 s were built in 1946 by both Baldwin and Alco they called them Niagras. There is still one that runs and is kept at Pueblo Museum Amigos del Ferrocarril.

Rough & Tumble Museum Kinzers Penna. on the Eastern edge of Lancaster County.
They also have a giant Corliss stationary engine built in Newark, NJ. The flywheel stands higher than 6 feet. They also have steam traction engines and a 2 foot Shay.

W&NRR ran in Wharton and Rockaway New Jersey. It was one of the Iron Railways of NJ. The best Iron Ore in the world was found in these two towns.
The problem was it was mined in very deep mines not on the surface as in the Mesabi Iron Range, all the mines are now closed in NJ.
Historically, over 200 years ago George Washington was quite interested in these mines because of the high grade Iron Ore.

Narrow Gauge 3ft White Pass & Yukon Skagway Alaska. I took this picture Aug. 2003.
To my friends around the world, I made a big trip this past summer, 7800 miles on Amtrak, 2400miles on a ship and another 1000 miles in rented car. I was less than 1000 miles from the International dateline which separates Alaska from Russia, can you imagine that I don't fly in airplanes. Saul

2 of the twenty that went to the New South Wales Government Railway are still running at two different railway museums (4' 8-1/2 inch).
They were oil burners when new, but switched to coal. I have been told by a railfan in Australia that even though they had small drivers they were used in passenger train sevice near Maitland in NSW. They could move fast.
They may have been some of the last Baldwin steam engines built. The other engine is 5917. I have some video of 5910 going to Lithgow, where the ZigZag is located.

It ran close to my home at the Becker Dairy farms in Roseland NJ. It was over a mile long engine was built in 1941 it looked like a DL&W Pocono 4-8-4. It ran until 1973, a new highway 280 put it into retirement and it was given to Greenfield village where it was on display for a few years then it was sold to an investor who won't give it up. The nine inch track has been relaid in Phillipsburg NJ.
Henry Becker who created the railroad called Centerville & Southwestern just passed away at age 84.

On Jan 25, 2004 I took pictures of rebuit PCC cars at the Elmwood Ave Carbarn in Philadephia. They were rebuilt by the Brookville locomotve work in western Penna. The first 2 are part of an 18 car rebuilding. They will run on Girard Ave Route 15. A device on front will cause a traffic light to change at each cross street in favor of the streetcar. These cars are now Air-Condtioned.

Moving the LRV cars to the Newark City Subway From Harrison NJ and Supor's Storage building. These trailers also have moved Washinton DC subway cars form same building over 220 miles to Washington DC. The ex-Pennsy MAIN line passes these building and they are not interested in having a siding there, shame on the railroads.

Here is a picture of the Franklin poppet valve on US Army No. 611, S160 design. USATC 2628 was its original number. It is a 2-8-0 which was donated to Texas State Railway in 1960 and is now at TVRM after a 1991 trade.

I took pictures of 611 in the spring of 1962 at Fort Eustis VA near the shop. You will see what is so special about this model S160 in the part2 photo . This engine has a "Caproetta" Valve gear. Some people call it a "Franklin Poppet Valve." This engine is now on display at TVRM in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Picture taken by Bill Dunn at Bathurst NSW April 1994. Built by Clyde Engine co (4-6-2) to standard gauge. Only Steam Locomotive to have gone from Sydney to Perth WA. Has run on many Railfan trips, they even sing songs about the "Jolly Green Giant" and it was even on a postage stamp. Some claim she is the most famous steam locomotive in all of Australia which is still running. I have many PAL tapes of it running. Saul's collection.

I took this picture in the rain at Front Royal Va. It was the first trip out of Washington DC in 13 years on the Southern Railway with a Steam Locomotive. They were standing in the rain just to see the engine and train pass. I was riding on this train as it went into the passing track at Potomac Yard. All the workers stopped what they were doing to see 4501 going by, gave it a whistle salute. Some said there were over 100,000 people that came out in the rain to see the engine go by.
